What Is Insert Molding?
Insert molding is a process that places metal or electronic inserts into a mold before molten plastic is injected around them. After cooling, the insert becomes locked inside the plastic part, creating a stronger and more functional component.
This process is commonly used for threaded inserts, copper pins, terminals, bushings, sensor parts, connector contacts, and small electronic components. It can reduce secondary assembly, improve pull-out strength, and help plastic parts carry load, torque, or electrical connection requirements.
Common Inserts and Materials for Insert Molding
| Insert Type | Compatible Plastic Resins | Typical Applications |
|---|---|---|
| Stainless steel, brass, aluminum inserts | ABS, PC, PA, PP, PBT | Reinforced housings, automotive connectors, structural plastic parts |
| Threaded inserts, screws, bushings | PA, POM, PC, ABS | Threaded plastic parts, mounting points, torque-support structures |
| Copper pins, terminals, contacts | PBT, PA, LCP, PC | Electrical connectors, precision electronics, sensor housings |
| PCB and small electronic components | PC, PP, flame-retardant engineering plastics | Smart device modules, sealed electronics, functional plastic assemblies |
Automotive
Insert molding is used for connectors, sensor housings, brackets, terminals, and reinforced plastic components.
Medical
Insert molded parts can support threaded inserts, metal pins, small housings, and components that need stable assembly.
Aviation
Insert molding helps create lightweight plastic parts with embedded metal features for secure fastening and electrical connection.
Consumer Goods
Common applications include handles, knobs, clips, housings, charging components, and small assembled plastic parts.
